Clickbait.

I should buy Ford stock? That’s kinda what I got from this long article. I found it interesting as I knew nothing about Jim Hackett, Ford’s new CEO.

I said “YES!” a few times reading sentences like these:

“Maddening” is Hackett’s one-word description for 90-button TV remotes.”

“insist that the customer should not have to learn to speak the company’s internal language. The company should learn to speak the customer’s.”

So if Hackett and Ford are right, the User Experience, Human-Machine Interface company is the future of cars, not mechanical or software engineers or the car guys.

I guess we all knew this but the author put it into words nicely: “At present, the question hovering over the car industry is basically whether high-tech entrants such as Tesla and Google can learn crankshafts and drivetrains faster than Ford, GM, and other carmakers can learn software and algorithms.”

I’ve actually met Hackett, I was an intern at Steelcase when he was still there. I don’t know where I’m going with this though. I do remember he spoke to us using words, an interface that was definitely useful in communicating with each other.

in my short couple of years i’ve stayed away from automotive. as long a ford has been around and tesla already has double the market cap, and they don’t seem to have that groundbreaking technology that will put them anywhere near the same convo as tesla.

as sad as it is to say, and that article allows to it, is that the technologically focused companies will outperform enthusiast focuses companies, simply based on the masses who’d rather have a fuckin tv screen in their dash than ever have anything analog.

Even though they’re no longer making cars? (except Mustang ). Even with preserved global car making capability, it’s got to them a while to shift gears if (when ) gas prices go back up.

I completely agree with you. I bought a new Transit in 2017. I stuck with the base radio. No screen. No nav. But I got the 3.5 EcoBeast. I’m going to try not to join you in the nursing home.

oh, I always think that if I know something, then everyone does. It’s the original Suzuki Katana 750. Late ‘70s. Italian designer. I’ve never ridden one so I imagine it’s looks outweigh it’s handling; that it has the typical ‘70s noodley handling. But design was decades ahead of it’s time.

I’d love to have one just to look at. I haven’t researched them. I would think prices are high. But if not, it’d probably be a good bike to hold onto since they never sold many. So you should defini tely get one.

As someone who owns a bunch of 70s and early 80s machines, I actually like the chaotic handling of those machines. They have way more power than their brakes and suspension can handle!

Think I have another bike to add to my bucket list!

Excellent!! I can own a Katana vicariously through you. I don’t like gray/silver boring colors on sporty cars and bikes. But t he Katana looks good in silver.

I owned a ‘74 Kawasaki H1. 500cc two-stroke triple. Two-strokes had like 2 or 3x the power of the same size 4-stroke. Too much peaky power and speed with no handling. Risk/reward ratio wasn’t for me.

I can’t remember - you may have lower HP and/or 4-stroke ‘70s bikes? Or you’re just a better rider than I ever was? Or I’m more chicken than you are?
